Virtuemart has a built-in coupon system that has some drawbacks. One of the biggest problems is that you can't limit a coupon to a specific product. You want to give $25.00 off a $100.00 item, but you can't out of fear that someone might order a $10.00 item and expect to get it free. Another drawback is the problem of percentages. You want to give 10% off, but you want to make sure that someone orders at least $50.00 in merchandise and you want to cap the discount at no more than $20.00 - regardless of how big the order is. In base Virtuemart, a 10% off coupon can put you on the hook for an unlimited amount of money.
There is a lot the base coupon functionality of Virtuemart won't do. But do you, as a Joomla developer who uses Virtuemart, have to live with this situation? Not anymore!
CorFun's new Target Coupon component has enhanced the Virtuemart Coupon functionality to make it usable for the real world.
The Target Coupon component adds the following fields to the Virtuemart Coupon process:
Product ID - If one or more Product IDs are specified, then the coupon is restricted for use only with those specified products. Enter one or more Category IDs to apply the coupon to all products in those categories. Combine the two features as shown in the example to set up a coupon that applies to whole categories plus some specified Products that are in other Product Categories. When a coupon is restircted to certain products, it will not apply to any other product in the shopping cart. So, want to offer $50.00 off a $200.00 product, but make sure that $50.00 does not go for a bunch of T-Shirts? Then specify the Product ID of the expensive product in the coupon set up and the $50.00 will only be applied against one or more items of just that product! Have a whole category of expensive products that you would like to offer $50.00 off, but not apply that to any other products in your store? Then specify the Category and the coupon will apply only to products from that Category! This is optional, because you can create coupons which apply to an entire order, not just specific products.
Minimum Order Amount for Discount - Amount required to receive the coupon discount. When a coupon applies to specific Products only, then the total amount of those Products in the shopping cart must be equal or greater than this amount for the coupon to be valid. If the coupon is not for specific Products, then the total amount in the shopping cart must be equal to or greater than this amount for the coupon to be valid.
Maximum discount amount - This field is optionally used to provide an upper limit on percentage discounts. For example, you offer a 20% discount, but with a maximum of $20.00 off. If someone buys a $300.00 item, the discount on that item would normally $60.00 in base Virtuemart. But this field added by Target Coupon allows you to cap the discount value at $20.00.
Free Shipping - When a coupon is good for a single Product ID, you can optionally use this field to set the number of items of that product that will ship for free. For exmaple, I have a coupon good for a specific T-shirt. The coupon gives $10.00 off the price of the shirt, plus free shipping on 1 item. The weight of the free items is subtracted from the total weight of the order before the shipping fee calculation is performed. If more than one product is covered by a coupon, then my options in this field are either "N" for no free shipping, or "Y" which ships all the products covered by the coupon for free. If a coupon is for the entire order, meaning no products are specified, then the options are "N" for no free shipping, or "Y" to ship the entire order for free!
Expiration Date - The last date on which this coupon can be used.
How can you use Target Coupon in your Virtuemart store? Here are some suggestions:
Example 1: In my Virtuemart store I want to offer a buy one, get one free and not charge for the shipping of a book I am featuring. The book has Product ID 40. (The product ID can be found by listing the products in your Virtuemart store and looking on the far right of the table.) The book sells for $10.00
So how would I set that up? Easy! Using the extended coupon functionality of Target Coupon, I would set up the following:
Click the option in Virtuemart to set up a new coupon.
Pick a coupon code that is easy for folks to remember like "Free Book"
Set the new coupon to be restricted to Product ID 40.
Set the coupon amount to $10 - the price of one book.
Set the minimum purchase amount to $20.00. In other words, the shopping cart of the customer trying to use the coupon must contain at least two of these books for the coupon to be valid.
Set the number of items for free shipping to 1.
That is it, you are ready to go!
When the shopper orders 2 books and enters the coupon code, the coupon amount of $10 will be applied. A message will be displayed to the purchaser if the minimum order amount is not satisfied.
Example 2: In my Virtuemart store I want to give a discount of 20% for all purchases of at least $100. I want to cap the discount at $50.
Skip the Product ID to have this apply to the entire shopping cart.
Set the coupon percentage to 20.
Set the minimum purchase amount to $100.
Set the maximum discount amount to $50.
If the discount code is entered, the minimum purchase amount will be verified. If the purchase is too small, a message will be displayed. If the minimum amount is met, the system will calculate the discount amount and will check it against the maximum discount amount. If the percentage calculated exceeds the maximum, the maximum of $50 for this coupon will be used.
Example 3: In my Virtuemart store I want to offer free shipping for a particular item.
Set up a coupon for the specific Product ID.
Set the number of items to free ship to the value you desire from 1 to 9999999. Items ordered up to the free ship limit will not have their weight included into the total shipping weight thus resulting in free shipping for those items.
Items not covered by the coupon will charge normal shipping! This is the only way to use Virtuemart to give free shipping on a specific product.
Example 4: In my Virtuemart store I want to offer a 50% off coupon for an entire Category of seasonal products. I do not want the shopper to be able to use the coupon for any other merchandise. However, I do want the shopper to be able to purchase other items if he/she wishes.
Set up a coupon for that specific Category of merchandise.
Define the percentage discount as 50%.
