Login Redirect for Community Builder

Joomla plus Community Builder = a community site! But, here's the problem. Users fill out a profile which is set in Community Builder. That profile gives you critical information about that site member. Based on one of those fields, you often want to direct them to a specific page upon logging in. A page that puts the most relevant information in the user's face as soon as he or she logs in. Login Redirect for Community Builder gives you, the Webmaster, just this ability.

Just pick a field to use for determining how to route users after logging in. Specify a default URL and a URL for each field value as desired. Just that quick and easy, plus you can also use this component to provide users with their own personal home page!

Here's an example. On your Website's CB User Profile, you have a field called cb_mystate (The state of residence or interest of the user on the CB profile). Note: Login Redirect CB will work with any select field you have defined, this is just an example. In Login Redirect CB you pick the field cb_mystate to use as the redirect field. You can then add as many unique URLs as you have options for selection in that field. You can also enter a default URL for users that don't have a value selected in the cb_m field. Remember - the number of unique values and URL combinations is unlimited in Joomla 2.5!

In our example, here are the example values in the field:

• AL
• FL
• GA
• LA

The first screen capture shows the set up of the default URL (for site users that chose not to tell you their state) and the redirect field choice. The second screen capture shows the process of setting up a new unique URL mapped to one of the field values. The third shows the component with three unique landing page for three of the field values from the list above.  Not all values need to be mapped. Users without a specified landing page, will get the default.

You can also use Login Redirect CB to create personal User Homepages for your users using an administrative field that the user never sees! Check the "Uses" tab in this product for more information.

This component can used in two different ways as detailed below.

Redirect Based on Values from a Select Box Field

Select a field from the Community Builder profile that has values which you want to use in order to redirect users when they log in to specific landing pages. (The field must be a select box field.) Map an unlimited number of values to an unlimited number of URLs.

URLs can be on your site or external links. Multiple select-box values can share the same URL if desired. You can also set up a default URL for users who don't have a value for that field or who have a value for which you don't have a specific page to show. 

As users log in to your site, they will automatically be redirected to the pages you selected for them to see based on their selections in the profile field chosen.

Examples for how to use this component:

• Take users automatically to a page with news on their City, State, or Zip Code (Purpose for which the component was originally created!)
• Take users automatically to a page with special offers from your store based on favorite type of music, books, clothing, etc.
• Take users directly to a discussion forum page for their specific religious preference.
•  Set up a default login page for users that don't have a preference based on your chosen profile field, or who have a value for which you don't have a special page.

These are just some examples. At CorFun, we have been both astonished and pleased at the creative uses that Webmasters have found for our component!

 Personal User Home Page

Some sites need to specify a personal homepage for each user. To do this, set up a default URL in Login Redirect for Community Builder component. This default will cover all users which don't have a specified URL to redirect to. Then, for the first option, choose a field on the CB profile that contains the Username, Last Name, or some other value which is unique by user. This can be an admin-view only field that the users can't even see. Map your users to their unique values, then set up unique URLs based on those values. When a user logs in that has a valid value mapped to a personal URL, he/she is redirected to a personal landing page. Using this method, you can create an unlimited number of redirects for all of your users!

This method has been used successful by vendor sites to give each client his/her own "portal" page, often in conjunction with Virtuemart or some other shopping cart. CB Login Redirect can be used by any type of site that needs unique homepages either per user, or per groups of users since more than one user can be sent to the same URL.

As you can see from these two major functions, there are a large number of uses for this component.  The component is very easy to set up and use. Please check out the demo and the documentation for more information.

On our demo site for this component, we have three pages set up to view after logging in. The page you get depends on the choice on the profile for Favorite Music. There is a special page for users who like 'Hardrock' and one for users who like 'Classical.' Those who like either 'Soft Rock,' 'Country' or who have no preference go to the default 'All Music' page.
