Login Redirect for Community Builder Released!

Posted by: Glen Chancy

You have a Website that specializes in local news. You have pages dedicated to various cities, replete with news, advertising, and all kinds of goodies for people who live in that area. You want visitors to your site to make it to their pages and get the best information for them.

How do you route them there in a Joomla environment? Easy - you have them register for your site using Community Builder, pick their city from a dropdown box, and then login! Assuming, of course, that you have the Login Redirect for Community Builder Component from CorFun. This new component allows Webmasters to map specific entries in a CB profile field to different URLs. When a user logs in, he or she goes directly to the page you feel is most relevant based on their profile!

Login Redirect Component Now Supports Juga

Posted by: olan chancy

The native login module for Joomla along with custom login modules (such as the one from Community Builder) have long allowed webmasters to specify a single page or URL to show when a user logs in. That is very helpful to route users, for example, to their profiles or to a page of the latest news or a list of the latest offers.

For many sites, that functionality is just fine. Often, however, Webmasters find they need to display a different 'welcome' screen for Registered users, versus Authors, versus Editors, versus Publishers, etc. Then the native login module functionality can get somewhat restrictive.

If you run a membership-based site, using Account Expiration Component (AEC) and JACLPLus for example, the problem is even more pronounced. You can sell a user a membership using AEC and assign that user to a specific User Group created via JACLPlus. However, the login module will show all users the same screen on logging in. Webmasters often need to get specific information to specific User Groups.  Suppose Free Membership users should go to a screen encouraging them to upgrade, while Platinum-level users should go straight to a page full of goodies just for them? The native functionality of Joomla simply doesn't allow this to happen!

Wear Your Faith

Posted by: olan chancy

Walk with Jesus CapBelieve in Jesus?  Then show your faith to the world by wearing it!  Jesus said, “Go ye into all the world” (Mark 16:15) and CorFun, a Christian-owned business, is making that easier than ever.  On Corshops.com, the eCommerce division of CorFun, you will find a complete selection of ball caps featuring Christian themes of all kinds.  Some of the caps are very traditional sporting a simple message like John 3:16 others have a comical but serious message such as sporting a frog with the message Don’t Croak Without Jesus.   There are even sportsman-themed hats featuring a bass on hook with the message Hooked on Jesus.

Best of all, CorShops.com offers the caps at wholesale prices to the general public.  The Christian and Jesus-themed caps are excellent individual or group gifts, and are reasonably-priced enough to make great fundraiser items.  As Henry Bentley, merchandising director for CorFun explains, “Our Christian head gear, including ball caps, ranges in price from $1.99 to $4.00 a piece.  Those prices are unbeatable for individual or low-volume purchases.  We have youth groups buying a few for a trip to Disney, and men’s fellowships buying a couple dozen to raise money for the needy. At these prices, it has never been easier to wear your faith.”

Google Mapping for SOBI2 Search Results Version 2.0 Released!

Posted by: Glen Chancy

Tagged in: SOBI2 , search results , maps , mapping , Joomla , Google , directories

SOBI2 is a fantastic directory component for the Joomla CMS. Using the power of SOBI2, a developer (or even a motivated novice) can build a Website that organizes any kind of data from business listings, to recipes, to software downloads, to photo galleries, and even more. SOBI2 even has a neat plugin available that searches by 'radius' or specified proximity to a selected Postal Code/ZIP Code. Want to create a site that lets people find dental offices (or anything else!) within a user-specified radius of their homes? Then SOBI2 is your solution of choice, especially if you want the power of content management and ease of use that Joomla brings to the table.

Only one little problem, really. SOBI2 has a fantastic search capability that can return excellent results for a user based on location, keyword, etc. But that list will not appear on a map. The individual listings will appear on a map, but the list of search results itself won't. That is, unless you have the Google Mapping for SOBI2 Search Results plugin from CorFun!

Templates and the FlyTabs Virtuemart Theme

Posted by: Glen Chancy

The Flytabs Virtuemart Theme does some really awesome things. In addition to arranging the product data in easy-to-navigate tabs, the theme provides the awesome Zoom Image functionality, image swap, and even an embedded video player.

Flytabs is a Virtuemart Theme. As explained in a different blog post, a Virtuemart Theme only controls the functioning of the shopping cart. Your Joomla website must have a template of some kind in addition to our Virtuemart tabbed theme.

The vast majority of Joomla templates will work with FlyTabs.  Here are some cases in which FlyTabs and your template may not get along.

A Used Mac is Better Than a New PC

Posted by: Glen Chancy

use macs, reconditioned macs, affordable macs, online macsA friend of mine asked me why I got a reconditioned Mac for my wife, instead of a new PC that was available from a box store for less money.

"Simple," I said, "I don't have time to play tech support."

Trust me - you can't afford a cheap PC. I design software and build Websites, and I can't afford the time and effort necessary to keep a cheap Windows Vista box up and running. Really, it's like a part-time job and I already have enough daily responsibilities.

Multiple Images in Virtuemart

Posted by: Glen Chancy

Virtuemart multiple images, lightbox, zoom image, jquery, rollover images, thumbnails, virtuemart theme, virtuemart templateWhen was the last time that your image presentation in Virtuemart actually wowed a client? Okay, the default image handling isn't too bad. You get a thumbnail, which pops up into a lightbox. If you need multiple images, then you get a stack of thumbnails on the product details page - which also pop up into lightboxes.

Frankly, it's all a little ho-hum to say the least. Much of what we sell on our CorShops site is actually software, so we don't need the images so much. After all, we can demo the software and that helps sell the sizzle. But most of our development clients sell physical products, and they need to put these in the best possible light. And that light is usually not a 'lightbox,' which is why we created the FlyTabs Virtuemart Theme.

Screencasting for Macs and PC - Our Recommendation

Posted by: Glen Chancy

As a company, CorFun was using Wink to do presentation and training movies. Wink is an open source application that did a decent job, and rendered its output as swf files that played nicely in a browser. However, as soon as we needed audio for training or demo videos, Wink just stopping cutting it.
