You have a Website that specializes in local news. You have pages dedicated to various cities, replete with news, advertising, and all kinds of goodies for people who live in that area. You want visitors to your site to make it to their pages and get the best information for them.
How do you route them there in a Joomla environment? Easy - you have them register for your site using Community Builder, pick their city from a dropdown box, and then login! Assuming, of course, that you have the Login Redirect for Community Builder Component from CorFun. This new component allows Webmasters to map specific entries in a CB profile field to different URLs. When a user logs in, he or she goes directly to the page you feel is most relevant based on their profile!
What are some uses for this kind of functionality?
- News sites - Get users immediately to a page with the kind of news and information they are interested in!
- eCommerce - Users tell you what kinds of things they are into on their profile. So when they login, send them to pages which have the things they are looking for!
- Community sites - Get users to pages which are targeted to groups with similar interests.
And many, many more uses. This is a component which has been sorely needed for a long time in the Joomla community. CorFun developed it after the success of the Login Redirect for Joomla component that provided login redirection by user class. That component worked great for Webmasters who had membership sites using core Joomla, JACLPlus, or JUGA. Based on the user class of the member logging in, the component routes to a specified URL.
Login Redirect filled a huge need in the Joomla space, but early in January 2010 an interesting request came in. A Webmaster in the UK was building a site which would feature news for each county in England. How could he get his users to the specific page for their counties on login? He had been tearing his hair out looking at all the options, and finally reached out to us to see what CorFun had to say.
After corresponding with him via email, it became clear to me that what he needed was to map the county values to specific URLs. Users could fill out their profiles, select a county, and then always go to the right place when logging in.
Thus, Login Redirect for Community Builder was born to do exactly that, and a whole lot more. After completing the code, we implemented it on a Christian discussion and networking site we manage. Now, users go directly to a Discussion Forum page based on the Christian denominations listed on their profiles. Now, no one complains that they can't find their forum! Better routing of users means happier users.
