I would like to have the product scroller show my product category (family) photo, in lieu of have all the products scroll. This way it would take the end user to the category page and they can choose the appropriate product from there. Is this possible?

Not as designed. The scroller works off the Product ID. That makes the scroller the best at displaying selected products. This is very unique, as no other product scroller for Virtuemart works that way. The focus of the design is on products, not on categories. To make this work, we would have to change the design of the scroller to allow category specification (or a default of all categories), and then link to the category page and image. That would be a nice enhancement, but the coding involved would be extensive.

The scroller is opensource, so if you would like to undertake the task then it is infinitely doable. I have added this as an enhancement request along with showing the 'add to cart' and product description. I think it would be a nice feature, but not one the current architecture supports.
