Pinewood Derby Cars

As a Royal Ranger Commander and a former Cub Scout Leader, I can tell you that nothing is more exciting to a boy or girl than to see his/her car racing down the track on its way to victory. Honestly, i think the moms and dads have as much fun as the kids. Building the car can be somewhat of a challenge depending on the car kit selected.  You can start out with the basic block of wood, two axles and four wheels, or you can buy kits can contain everything you need from sandpaper to paint.  This is what I usually recommend for those moms and dads like me who are pressed for time, but want the child to have a quality car that is highly competitive.  I also recommend that assembly of the car occur over a couple of evenings instead of trying to do everything at once.

The general steps should include time to:

• Paint the car.  This may involve multiple colors and may need to occur over a couple of nights.
• Customize the car.  Once the paint is dry, you may want to decorate with glitters, write the racer's name or do something to the car to distinguish it from the cars.
• Straighten the axles. Sand the wheels to remove all imperfections.
• Attach the weights to the car and weight it once everything is assembles.

Remember to check with the race sponsor for the specifics as to how much the car can weigh.  The closer to the weight limit you can make your car, the faster it will go.  Also remember that each scale will weigh a little different, be sure to arrive early enough to make adjustments to your car if needed.
